Metro Detroit Free Moving Boxes: Craigslist, Buy Nothing & What New Boxes Cost

From Detroit proper to Royal Oak, Dearborn, Warren and the western suburbs, Michigan moves generate a steady stream of leftover cardboard. You can find free boxes through local networks, then buy only the sizes those sources rarely have.

Lightning Movers works with customers across Metro Detroit. This guide covers practical materials tips for neighbors planning a move.

Where Metro Detroit scores free boxes

Craigslist Detroit Metro free section. Search “moving boxes,” “packing” or “curb alert.” Listings appear across Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties; respond quickly and check the boxes’ condition before pickup.

Facebook Marketplace, Buy Nothing and neighborhood groups. Royal Oak, Ferndale, Grosse Pointe, Livonia and Detroit groups often pass along flattened stacks. Post an ask with your city and how many boxes you need.

Nextdoor. Neighbors may post curbside boxes soon after unpacking. Ask when they were set out and whether they stayed dry.

Liquor stores and bars. Ask a manager after delivery days about sturdy bottle boxes with intact bottoms. Dividers can be useful for kitchen glassware.

Apartment complexes and student turnover. Midtown, Wayne State–adjacent and suburban complexes see move-out waves in summer and around semester’s end. Ask the office before taking anything from a recycling room.

U-Haul Take-A-Box Leave-A-Box and Box Exchange. Ask a nearby center whether a reuse bin is available, and check Box Exchange for peer giveaways around the metro.

Retail receiving (non-food first). Bookstores and small-goods retailers may have clean cartons. Ask staff; don’t enter private dumpsters.

Get good use from free boxes

Michigan winters punish soft cardboard. Store collected boxes indoors, away from damp garages and snow. Double-tape the bottoms of used cartons carrying books or tools.

  • Choose small boxes for dense items; basement stairs and icy porches are unforgiving.
  • Label each box with its destination room so unloaders aren’t guessing in a cold driveway.
  • After you’re settled, offer usable boxes to neighbors through Buy Nothing or another local group.

Boxes to skip, even if they’re free

  • Produce boxes with moisture stains or a fruit smell; they may be weakened or attract pests.
  • Open liquor trays without bottoms; they’re difficult to stack safely.
  • Boxes with grease, soft corners, torn handholds or a damp-garage smell.
  • Banana boxes with large cutouts that let small items fall through.
  • Any box with chemical, paint or oil residue.

A usable free box is clean and dry, closes fully, and still feels solid when you press its sides.

A Metro Detroit materials checklist

  • Start with Craigslist and Buy Nothing the week before your move; Royal Oak, Ferndale, Dearborn and Detroit posts can turn over quickly.
  • When free sources run out of book-weight cartons, compare a small-box bundle with single-box prices.
  • Re-check Lowe’s medium and XL prices at the local store before buying; online prices and availability vary.
  • Keep cardboard indoors overnight. Freeze-thaw cycles and garage damp can weaken boxes during Michigan winters.
  • After unloading, flatten and re-list usable boxes so the next mover can keep them dry.

A simple rule of thumb: if a free box flexes when you press the side walls, save it for linens or recycle it rather than loading it with dense items.
