Moving to Detroit: Where to Live, From a Metro Detroit Mover
I'm Cordell with Lightning Movers. We move people into Detroit and the inner suburbs every week. Here's a mover's-eye view of the neighborhoods we get asked about.
Downtown, Midtown and Corktown
These are the walkable core areas: lofts, newer apartments and converted buildings near Wayne State, the Detroit Medical Center and Michigan Central. Move-day tip: plan for loading docks, elevator reservations and COIs. Ask your building early.
Lafayette Park
Mid-century modern towers and townhomes east of downtown, near the Dequindre Cut.
Indian Village and the East Side
Large historic homes near the river. These homes have big furniture, tight staircases and older doorways, so measure first.
Palmer Woods and the University District
Larger single-family homes on the northwest side, near Woodward Avenue.
Just outside the city
If Detroit isn't the fit, Royal Oak, Ferndale and the Woodward corridor suburbs are popular too. Moving in August? Plan around the Woodward Dream Cruise.
Is Detroit safe?
It depends on the block. We won't rank neighborhoods. Visit the exact street at night before you sign.
